House District 71 Survey

As the 2014 Legislative Session nears, I would like to have your input on important issues that will come before the Legislature. Please take a few minutes and give me your recommendations on these issues:

Education

Common Core is a national Agenda proposed by a small group of Governors and State Superintendents that will require National Testing tied to Federal dollars. If implemented, testing would be designed on a national basis with disregard to input from local or state educational systems. In Louisiana, BESE adopted the Common Core Standards forcing local school systems to use the National Testing in 2015.

1. Do you favor Louisiana continuing with Common Core?

2. Would you be in favor of Louisiana NOT continuing with Common Core and using a curriculum and testing standard developed by educators in Louisiana?

TUITION INCREASE FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

Gov Jindal proposed and the Legislature approved tuition increases for college students in recent legislative sessions. These tuition increases are set to expire this year. Governor Jindal has proposed that these tuition increases be continued through the 2014-15 and 2015-2016 Years to help provide funding for the state general fund budget.

3. Do you favor continuing with tuition increases for college students through 2014-15 and 2015-16?

PRIVATIZATION OF HEALTH CARE

Governor Jindal proposed and the legislature approved Privatization of Health Care and closing Charity Hospitals. Privatization is causing a drain on state finances and services have been reduced statewide.

7. Do you favor legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes only?

ROADS

ABORTION

10.  Would you be in favor of increasing the restrictions to allow for an Abortion?

HEATLH CARE ACCESS

Many of the parishes in Louisiana do not have the access to services provided by an Ophthalmologist. Louisiana has almost twice as many Optometrist as Ophthalmologist.

11. Would you favor allowing Optometrist, if properly trained and certified, to provide limited treatment that has been provided only by Ophthalmologist?

OTHER

Tulane University annually provides a scholarship to each legislator to award to someone of their choosing. This practice has been going on for many years. When this practice was originally set up the scholarships were provide to legislators in exchange for Tulane receiving tax breaks and the practice continues today.

12. Would you be in favor of stopping the practice of Tulane providing scholarships to Legislators?

Governor Jindal continues to attempt to balance the annual state budget with the use of one time or recurring money. This is a risky practice as there is no assurance of funding in future years to cover spending allowed by the use of one time money.

13. Do you favor the use of one time money to balance the state budget?

14.  Do you think the State Superintendent of Education should be an elected position rather than appointed by the Governor?

15.  Do you favor shorter sentences for nonviolent offenders in order to save state dollars?
